Tick-borne Encephalitis

Further Information

Given as a course of three doses for full protection. The first two doses provide initial immunity and should be completed before travelling. A booster is recommended after 3 years.

Protects against tick-borne encephalitis, a viral infection spread through tick bites in parts of Europe and Asia, especially in forested or rural areas.

Side effects: May include mild arm soreness, headache, tiredness, or a low-grade fever. These symptoms usually settle within a day or two.

Additional precautions: Vaccination reduces the risk, but avoiding tick bites is still important. Wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and check your skin regularly if you’re hiking or camping.

Before your appointment: No specific preparation is required. Inform the clinician of any allergies or previous reactions to vaccines.

Risks caused by TBE: Can lead to fever, severe headaches, and in some cases inflammation of the brain or spinal cord. Serious complications can cause long-term neurological issues.
