Mefloquine (Anti-Malarial)

Further Information

Mefloquine is taken once weekly. Start at least 2 to 3 weeks before entering a malaria-risk area to ensure it suits you, continue throughout your stay, and take it for 4 weeks after leaving for complete protection.

Helps protect against malaria, a serious mosquito-borne infection found in many tropical and subtropical regions.

Side effects: Possible effects include dizziness, sleep disturbances, vivid dreams, or mild nausea. These are usually temporary but should be reported if persistent.

Additional precautions: Alongside medication, preventing mosquito bites is essential. Use repellents, wear long sleeves, and sleep under mosquito nets in high-risk areas.

Before your appointment: Inform the clinician if you have a history of mental health conditions, seizures, or heart rhythm problems, as Mefloquine may not be suitable.

Risks caused by malaria: Can trigger fever, chills, severe weakness, and in serious cases, organ complications. Without prevention or treatment, malaria can be life-threatening.
